Alex Palou’s hopes of winning the Good Ranchers 250 at Phoenix Raceway were shattered when he crashed early in the race. The reigning and four-time IndyCar Series champion, Palou, was involved in a collision with Rinus VeeKay’s #76 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet, causing him to wreck after just 22 laps on the 1-mile tri-oval. Starting 10th on the grid, Palou’s #10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda quickly moved into the top three after the green flag. However, a restart on Lap 19 saw Palou lose position to Graham Rahal’s #15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda.
During the race, VeeKay attempted to pass Palou from the high line, but contact was made between the two cars, causing Palou’s right-front to hit the outside wall, forcing him to retire from the race. Palou mentioned that he was unsure of what happened and needed to review the incident. VeeKay, on the other hand, felt that he was squeezed by Palou, and complained of potential suspension issues, running five laps down in 23rd place.
Despite the early crash that ended Palou’s 100th career start, VeeKay was able to continue racing, albeit with steering and suspension damage. This incident caused frustration for both drivers, highlighting the risks and challenges of competitive racing.
