F1 Academy has announced a significant change to its 2026 season schedule, introducing a three-race weekend structure for specific rounds. This new format will debut in Montreal for the second round and then return for the fifth round in Austin, Texas. The adjustment was made to ensure that the season still consists of 14 races following the cancellation of the Saudi Arabian round in April.
During the race weekends in Canada and the United States, the ‘Opening Race’ will be included alongside the reverse grid race and feature race. The starting grid for the ‘Opening Race’ will be determined by the drivers’ second-fastest qualifying time, eliminating the need for an additional qualifying session. Full championship points will be up for grabs in this race.
Susie Wolff, the managing director of F1 Academy, emphasized that the introduction of the ‘Opening Race’ at select rounds aims to provide more competitive track time for the most talented drivers. This new format is designed to enhance the race weekends and offer additional on-track action for fans and drivers alike.
Delphine Biscaye, F1 Academy’s head of race operations, highlighted that the ‘Opening Race’ allows them to innovate the race weekend structure while maintaining the sporting integrity of the series. By using each driver’s second fastest qualifying time to set the grid, a strategic element is added to the weekend. This approach also provides flexibility in case of a postponed race and maximizes track time available on the Grand Prix weekend schedule.
The second round of the 2026 season in Montreal, Canada, is set to take place from 22-24 May. As F1 Academy continues to evolve both on and off the track, this updated schedule aims to provide a compelling and dynamic racing experience for all stakeholders involved.
